Every time you create an espresso, there will be waste from the coffee puck. As a professional barista working in a coffee shop or restaurant, you want to get rid of these old, compacted coffee grounds as soon as possible. The simplest method is to use a knock bar to knock the coffee puck out of the portafilter.
All of the knock boxes have one thing in common: they all use a knock bar. Almost always, this is a metal tube or bar around which rubber is formed or fixed. These do wear out, which is why they are simple to replace.

Knock box drawer
The pull-out drawer is the most well-known and oldest type of knock box. This sort of knock box is typically put beneath or adjacent to the espresso machine. You merely need to open and close the drawer to get rid of your coffee puck. Two Italian firms created these drawers. Priolinox and Ronda.
There are two types of knock box drawers: those that swing out the knock box on bearings from the cupboard and those that do not. Ronda and Priolinox, for example, produce these varieties. However, you also have a tilt drawer, which only opens partially and can be easily closed again. Ronda is the sole manufacturer of these models.
Countertop model
These function similarly to built-in drawers but do not need to be built into a cupboard or workbench. There are two variations of these countertop knock boxes. There are two types: lightweight and heavy duty.
To save space, the lightweight version is appropriate for placing a coffee grinder on top of it. These are manufactured by companies such as Baristapro, Joe Frex, and Ronda. These knockboxes are constructed of stainless steel that has been welded or pressed. These knockboxes can be dismantled and cleaned. The knock bar is also detachable for easy cleaning or replacement. These knock boxes are suitable for both domestic (pro-sumer) and commercial use.
The heavy duty ones are only made by the Italian company Ronda. These are called the Ronda Coffee Cube. These knock box drawers are made in 3 different versions, for 1 up to 3 brewing group espresso machines. The single ones only have a knock box for waste coffee, the 2 and 3 group versions have a knock box and a accessory drawer.
Chute/knock box
This type comes in three varieties: freestanding, built-in, and electronic.
This type is primarily put in the countertop. This is essentially a square or circular tube with an internal knock bar. A rubbish bag may be placed beneath this built-in knock box to capture all the old coffee. These models, for example, are made by BaristaPro and Joe frex.
There is a freestanding version, which is a foot tube with a top piece that houses the knock bar. The rhino coffee gear firm created these.
Finally, there is only one electronic version. Pro-fondi is an Italian firm that makes this. This filter basket cleaner is also mounted on a countertop. You insert your portafilter into the device upside down, and it cleans the filterbasket on the inside. According to the maker, it is less noisy and reduces long-term injury to the barista's wrists and hands.
These variations are primarily seen in pubs, restaurants, and specialty coffee shops. So there are commercial applications.
Open knockbox on the counter
These open knock boxes are mostly utilised in household settings with limited coffee production. These come in a variety of materials, including plastic and metal. Also, have a knock bar in the centre of the box. Cafelat, Motta, Joe frex, and Rhino coffee gear manufacture them.
Ribelle, a South African business, has also developed a new sort of knockbox. They don't have a bar in the middle, but rather a section of the knockbox against which you strike your portafilter.
