Voor het maken van een perfecte espresso is een koffiedistributietool essentieel, in de meeste gevallen wordt een distributietool gebruikt in combinatie met een WDT. De grootste vraag is, wat doet een distributietool?

Wel verdeelt een verdeelhulpstuk de gemalen koffie in de filterbakje op een gelijkmatige manier. Zodat je een redelijk vlak getampt hebt. De verdeelhulpmiddelen zijn tevens in hoogte verstelbaar. Als je het opzetstuk te hoog zet, komt het helemaal niet in contact met de koffie of schuimt het er gewoon overheen. Als je het te diep maakt, zal het de koffie net rondploegen of de bodem van het filterbakjeje raken. Een ander belangrijk kenmerk is dat de kans op channelling/microchanneling wordt verkleind.

De diameter is ook een belangrijk kenmerk voor de waterpasinstrumenten, aangezien je bij gewone stampers verschillende maten hebt. De meest voorkomende maat is 58mm, dit wordt gebruikt op merken als Faema, Rocket, ECM, Marzocco, Bezzera, Nuova Simonelli en Victoria Arduino. Een andere maat is 57mm, deze wordt voornamelijk gebruikt op Cimbali espressomachines. In veel gevallen zijn de 57 en 58 mm tamper verwisselbaar. Een heel ander formaat is de 53mm koffie leveller, deze wordt gebruikt op espressomachine merken zoals La Spaziale en San Marco.

Koffie nivelleergereedschappen worden gemaakt door verschillende merken zoals Motta, Rocket, Pullman, JoeFrex, ECM, Bravo en Asso.
