How to select the correct refrigeration component
Refrigeration circuit parts are often selected by their own component reference and technical interface rather than by equipment brand alone. The same type of component can be used across different refrigeration, cooling or HVACR applications when the complete specification matches.
A practical selection order is:
- Component or manufacturer reference – use the original reference or confirmed cross-reference where available.
- Component family – determine whether you need a filter drier, fitting, indicator, complete solenoid valve, coil or electrical connector.
- Exact type or series – products from the same manufacturer can use different constructions and interfaces.
- Connection standard – identify SAE, ODS, metric tube connection or another specified interface.
- Connection size and configuration – verify inlet and outlet sizes, male/female arrangement and number of ports.
- Functional specification – check filter construction, valve operating principle, flow configuration or other component-specific data.
- Electrical specification – for coils and electrically operated valves, verify voltage, frequency and coil compatibility.
- Physical specification – compare dimensions, capacity, orifice or other relevant values where stated.
- Component manufacturer – confirm the manufacturer and component series where known.
- Origin – distinguish OEM/original and compatible replacements where this classification applies.
Do not select a refrigeration part from one specification alone. The same nominal connection, body size or electrical voltage can be used on technically different components.
Filter driers for refrigeration systems
Filter driers are available in different constructions, capacities and connection configurations. When replacing a filter drier, start with the manufacturer reference where possible and then compare the inlet and outlet connections, number of ports, filter construction and physical specifications.
For example, products within the range can use different inlet and outlet diameters or multi-port configurations. A similar body size or capacity does not make two filter driers interchangeable if the refrigerant connections are different.

Refrigeration fittings, service connections and indicators
The refrigeration fittings range includes connection hardware as well as circuit-monitoring components such as humidity indicators. These parts should first be separated by function before comparing their connection dimensions.
For fittings and service components, check:
- component type and function;
- connection standard;
- nominal connection size;
- male, female or mixed configuration;
- tube or pipe diameter where specified;
- manufacturer reference.
For example, a 1/4″ SAE connection can be used on different nuts, tees, service fittings and indicators. The nominal size alone therefore does not identify the correct component.
See all refrigeration fittings and indicators for the available connection and component types.
Solenoid valves, coils and electrical components
The refrigeration solenoid-valve range contains more than complete valves. Depending on the product, you may need the complete valve body, only the solenoid coil or a separate electrical connection component.
First determine which part of the valve assembly needs to be replaced. A coil should not be treated as a complete valve, and a complete valve should not be selected from the coil voltage alone.
For complete refrigeration solenoid valves, relevant specifications can include:
- manufacturer and valve series;
- normally closed or other operating configuration;
- direct-acting, diaphragm or other valve construction;
- connection type and size;
- orifice or flow specification where stated;
- compatible coil series.
For replacement coils, verify the exact valve or coil series as well as voltage and frequency. Two coils with the same voltage are not automatically compatible with the same valve body.
Browse refrigeration solenoid valves, coils and related components. For related manufacturer-specific parts, see Castel refrigeration components.
Connection standards and sizes
Refrigeration components can use SAE flare connections, ODS connections, metric tube sizes and other interfaces. These specifications describe different connection systems and should not be reduced to diameter alone.
When matching a connection, verify the standard → nominal size → male/female configuration → tube or mating connection. For multi-port components, check every inlet and outlet separately.
A fitting or valve with one matching connection does not confirm that the complete component is suitable for the system.
Complete valve, coil or connector?
Before ordering an electrically controlled refrigeration component, identify whether the fault or service requirement concerns the complete valve, the valve body, the solenoid coil or the electrical connector.
These components can be supplied separately and have different selection criteria. The mechanical valve interface, coil interface and electrical connection should therefore be treated as separate specifications.
Component manufacturer and reference
Refrigeration circuit components are frequently manufactured by specialist component manufacturers rather than by the brand of the refrigerator, cold-room system or other equipment in which they are installed.
Where known, use the actual component manufacturer and reference as a primary identification point. Brooks Parts carries refrigeration components from manufacturers including Castel, Danfoss and Dena.
Machine or system application can provide additional confirmation where it is specifically stated, but a shared application should never be assumed from connection size or manufacturer alone.
OEM and compatible refrigeration components
Where a product is classified as OEM/original or Compatible (non-original), this describes the origin of the replacement component. A compatible part should not be interpreted as a component manufactured by the equipment brand simply because it is suitable for that application.
For both OEM and compatible components, selection should remain based on the component reference and complete technical interface.
Before ordering refrigeration parts
Identify the existing component and reference wherever possible. Then compare component family → exact type or series → connection standard → connection size and configuration → functional specification → electrical specification where applicable → component manufacturer → origin.
