How to choose the right coffee tamper
The most important specification when choosing a coffee tamper is the diameter of the tamping base. The tamper should fit closely inside the filter basket without touching or binding against the sides. A tamper that is too small leaves a wider untamped edge, while a tamper that is too large may not fit correctly.
For this reason, choose your espresso tamper based on the filter basket rather than only on the espresso machine brand. Different machines from the same manufacturer can use different brewing groups and filter basket dimensions.
58 mm espresso tampers and smaller sizes
A 58 mm espresso tamper is commonly used with many commercial and prosumer espresso machines. Other espresso machines, including compact domestic and traditional lever machines, can use smaller filter baskets. Always compare the stated tamper diameter with the basket you actually use.
Stainless steel and wooden coffee tampers
Many coffee tampers use a stainless-steel base because it is durable, easy to clean and provides a smooth tamping surface. Handles can be manufactured from wood, metal or other materials. Once the correct diameter has been selected, the preferred weight, handle shape and material are largely a matter of personal preference.
Preparing the coffee before tamping
For consistent tamping, distribute the ground coffee as evenly as possible throughout the filter basket before applying pressure. Keep the tamper level and create a flat coffee bed rather than focusing on applying as much force as possible.

Which espresso tamper do I need?
Measure the internal diameter of the filter basket before ordering. If you already have a tamper that fits correctly, you can also measure its base and compare that measurement with the product specifications above.
