The Rancilio MD40 coffee grinder is one of the models from the MD series. This model is the smallest one of the series. But does have the iconic features of the MD series. Such as the blue transparent hopper and doser The coffee hopper on the MD40 is also used on the MD50 and the MD80 coffee grinder.
The hopper is filled with coffee beans, from there the beans go towards the grinding burrs. In the case of the MD40, these are flat grinding burrs. These coffee grinding burrs have a outer diameter of 50mm and a inner diameter of 31mm. The bottom grinding burr holder pushes the coffee down into the doser. In this doser there is a limited amount of coffee grounds stored. This ground coffee can be dosed into the portafilter by pulling a lever on the side of the doser. After dosing, you can use the tamper on the front of the doser to compress the coffee.
The MD40 coffee grinder is solely available in a single phase version. Those versions are the 110V and the 230V motors. The single phase versions do have a advantage that you can plug it into basically every socket. But the single phase motors do require a start capacitor to start the motor.
