Which double portafilter is suitable for my espresso machine?
Well this does depends on which brand you have and in some cases also of which model of espresso machine. Seen there are various brands which use different types of brewing groups, where the portafilters aren’t interchangeable to each other.
What makes double portafilter filters different from each other?
The biggest difference is in 2 things. First off all the size of the portafilter and the other thing are the ears. If you don’t have the correct size portafilter you won’t be able to install it correctly into your brewing group. For instance a 54mm portafilter won’t fit in a brewing group which normally accepts 58mm portafilters.
The ears on a double espresso portafilter are in most cases typical to a espresso machine brand. Where for instance Breville and San Marco use a 3 ear configuration, is the 2 ear configuration standard with brands such as Faema, Marzocco, Cimbali, Slayer and Bezzera. But that means that those portafilters can be interchanged. You do have also factors such as ear orientation and ear thickness which make them different.
What kind of filterbaskets are used on a double portafilter?
On a double portafilter you normally use a double basket, these are primarily made by the Italian company IMS Filtri. The filterbaskets range in various external diameters and heights. They range from a outer diameter of 48mm all the way up to 70mm. With a variety of heights going from 21mm all the way up to 28,5mm. This does depend on the brand of coffee machine.
