Frequently Asked Questions

No. There are a lot of single portafilters which are interchangable, such as with a lot of e61 style brewing groups. But in a lot of cases the dimensions do vary
In general portafilters are made from casted and machined brass, which has been nickel and chrome plated. In some cases you will find a stainless steel portafilter. but this is not really standard.
Cleaning your portafilter is quite simple. Remove the filterbasket from the portafilter, this can be easily be done with the IMS removal tool. Prepare a container with warm water and put or Puly Caff or Brooks cleaner inside this container. Now you can put your portafilter in the liquid and let it soak. Never submerge any part of the handle!.
if you want yo clean the portafilter spout, use our Brooks cleaning brushes.
No, you can't use any filterbasket for your portafilter. seen the sizes range in diameter from 65mm all the way up to 70mm. On this page you can select single filterbaskets on size and brand

Single portafilters for espresso machines

Find single portafilters for professional and domestic espresso machines. A single portafilter is normally configured with a single coffee spout and a corresponding single filter basket, but this configuration does not determine whether the portafilter fits the brewing group.

Where possible, start with the machine manufacturer, exact model and OEM reference. If you know the espresso machine but not the correct portafilter, start with espresso machine parts by brand and model.

Do not select a single portafilter from machine brand, nominal size or lug thickness alone. The complete locking geometry must correspond to the brewing group, including the number of locking lugs, lug orientation and lug thickness. Different machines from the same manufacturer can use different brewing groups and portafilter systems.

A useful selection order is:

machine/model or OEM reference → brewing group/locking system → number of locking lugs → lug orientation → lug thickness → portafilter/body system → single-spout type and thread → included filter basket and spring → listed machine application

For other configurations, see the complete espresso machine portafilter range. Related parts include single filter baskets, portafilter spouts, filter-basket retaining springs and portafilter gaskets.

How to find the correct single portafilter

A single portafilter is identified by more than its single coffee outlet. The portafilter body must first lock correctly into the brewing group. Only after the correct locking system has been identified should the spout, basket and supplied components be compared.

Where possible, identify the replacement in this order:

machine manufacturer → exact model/version → OEM reference → brewing group/locking system → number of locking lugs → lug orientation → lug thickness → portafilter/body system → single-spout connection → filter basket and spring → listed machine application

Start with the machine, model and OEM reference

The machine manufacturer and exact model are normally the strongest starting points. Use espresso machine parts by brand and model before comparing portafilter dimensions.

Do not assume that every espresso machine from one manufacturer uses the same portafilter. Domestic and commercial models, different generations and different brewing groups within the same brand can use different locking systems.

If an OEM reference is available on the original component, in an exploded view or in service documentation, use it together with the technical specifications and listed machine applications.

“Single” describes the portafilter configuration, not the brewing-group fit

A single portafilter is normally configured with a single coffee spout and a corresponding single filter basket. The term “single” does not describe the bayonet connection that locks the portafilter into the brewing group.

Within some machine families, single and double portafilters can share similar body and locking geometries. In other applications the body, spout, basket, spring, handle or complete assembly can differ.

For replacement purposes, identify the portafilter from its machine application and locking geometry rather than assuming that every single portafilter uses the same body design.

A single portafilter is not the same as a bottomless portafilter

“Single” and “bottomless” describe different characteristics.

A single portafilter is configured for a single-basket and single-spout application. A bottomless or naked portafilter describes a portafilter with an open underside beneath the filter basket and no conventional coffee spout.

A bottomless portafilter should therefore not automatically be classified as a single-coffee portafilter. For open-bottom versions, see the bottomless portafilter category.

Locking geometry determines whether the portafilter fits

The locking lugs on the side of the portafilter engage with the brewing group. Several specifications need to correspond.

Number of locking lugs

Many commercial espresso-machine portafilters use two locking lugs, but three-lug systems also exist. The number of lugs must correspond to the brewing-group design.

Lug orientation

Single portafilters in this category include different lug positions, including configurations such as 45° and 90°. Lug orientation helps distinguish between different locking geometries.

Lug thickness

Lug thickness affects how the portafilter engages with the brewing group. Small dimensional differences can indicate another group or machine application.

Do not use lug count, orientation or thickness as an isolated compatibility rule. These specifications must be combined with the exact machine, brewing group and application.

The same espresso-machine brand can use different portafilter systems

La Cimbali provides a useful example.

The La Cimbali single portafilter, Brooks reference 50-764-L-1165308 and La Cimbali reference 537-027-100, uses locking lugs positioned at 90° with a thickness of 5.5 mm. It is supplied with a single coffee spout, retaining spring and single filter basket.

However, this portafilter is not suitable for certain M27 2008 C, M27 2008 DT, M27 RE and M23up applications because those machines use a different, Faema-type brewing group.

This shows why:

same machine brand ≠ automatically the same brewing group or portafilter

The exact machine model and brewing-group application remain essential.

E61 does not identify one universal single portafilter

The terms E61 and E61-style are used for several traditional brewing-group designs, but they should not be treated as one universal portafilter specification.

The Faema E61 Legend/Jubilee single portafilter, Brooks reference 50-775-L-1165324 and Faema reference 2771-135 804, has two locking lugs positioned at 90° with a thickness of 6.3 mm. The spout connection is 3/8" BSP-G and the portafilter is supplied with a single basket and spring.

This version is specifically intended for the Faema E61 Legend and Jubilé and is not the same portafilter used on the vintage Faema E61.

E61/E61-style + similar nominal dimensions ≠ automatically the same portafilter fit

Three-lug single portafilters also exist

Not every single portafilter uses a two-lug bayonet.

The La San Marco single-spout portafilter, Brooks reference 49-347-L-1165080, uses three locking lugs with a thickness of approximately 7.4 mm. Its single-spout connection uses a 3/8" BSP-G thread.

The number of lugs alone therefore does not identify a replacement. A three-lug portafilter must still match the exact locking geometry and listed machine application.

Nominal size is only one part of the specification

Dimensions such as 58 mm, 65 mm or other nominal portafilter and basket-system sizes can help identify a portafilter family, but they do not describe the complete locking system.

The Astoria/Wega single portafilter, Brooks reference 50-758-L-1165076, corresponds with Astoria reference 27311056 and Wega reference WY27311056. It has locking lugs positioned at 90° with a thickness of 7 mm and is listed specifically for Astoria Plus 4 You and Wega Concept 52 applications.

A nominal body or basket-system size should therefore be used as an additional specification, not as proof of compatibility.

Single coffee spouts are not all the same

Once the correct portafilter body has been identified, compare the single coffee spout.

Single-spout designs can include:

  • open single spouts;
  • partially open spouts;
  • closed single spouts;
  • straight short or long spouts;
  • older or machine-specific attachment designs.

These designs can differ in appearance, cleaning access and serviceability, but the connection to the portafilter body must also be correct.

Check the spout thread standard and size

A common single-spout connection is 3/8" BSP-G. Certain systems also use metric connections such as M16.

These are different thread standards and must not be treated as interchangeable.

For a replacement portafilter spout, use:

spout configuration → thread standard → thread size → portafilter body/application → OEM reference where available

Do not select a replacement simply because both components are described as a “single spout”.

Some single portafilters use machine-specific spout designs

Not every coffee spout uses a conventional threaded connection. Older or machine-specific assemblies can use different attachment methods.

This is another reason to identify the complete portafilter by machine and OEM application before replacing only the coffee spout.

Check whether the filter basket and spring are included

The supplied configuration differs between products.

A complete single portafilter can include:

  • a single filter basket;
  • a filter-basket retaining spring;
  • a single coffee spout;
  • a handle;
  • or only some of these components.

For example, the La Cimbali and Faema Legend/Jubilé examples above are supplied with a basket and spring, while other products are supplied differently.

The La Spaziale single portafilter, reference 02891, has 90° locking lugs with a thickness of 6 mm and an open single spout. It is supplied with a stainless-steel retaining spring but without a filter basket.

The Astoria/Wega example above is supplied without a basket and without a retaining spring.

Always check the individual product page rather than assuming that every single portafilter is delivered with the same components.

Portafilter fit and filter-basket fit are separate specifications

The portafilter must lock correctly into the brewing group, while the single filter basket must fit correctly inside the portafilter body. These are two different mechanical interfaces.

A compatible single portafilter therefore does not mean that every single filter basket will fit it.

For the basket, compare specifications such as:

external rim diameter → basket body diameter → overall height → dose range → ridged/ridgeless retention → listed application

Do not identify a basket from nominal portafilter size, tamper diameter or dose alone.

Filter-basket retaining spring

Many portafilters use a stainless-steel retaining spring to hold the filter basket inside the body.

If the portafilter locks correctly into the machine but the basket is loose, difficult to retain or falls out during normal handling, inspect the basket and spring combination separately.

Replacement parts can be found in the portafilter spring category.

Cross-brand applications can be technically correct

A single portafilter can legitimately be listed for more than one espresso-machine brand when the machines use the same or compatible brewing-group and locking geometry.

Cross-brand compatibility should be based on confirmed machine applications, OEM references and technical fit rather than appearance or nominal size alone.

Conversely, two machines carrying the same brand name can require different portafilters if they use different brewing groups.

OEM and compatible single portafilters

An OEM/original portafilter is supplied under, or directly corresponds with, the original machine manufacturer's part reference. A compatible single portafilter is supplied as an alternative for a confirmed application.

Compatible does not mean universal. A compatible portafilter must still match the brewing group, locking geometry, required dimensions and listed machine application.

Where available, use the OEM reference together with the Brooks reference and technical specifications when identifying a replacement.

Compatible machine brand and component manufacturer are different entities

A compatible portafilter can be intended for a particular espresso-machine brand without having been manufactured by that machine manufacturer.

When identifying the product, distinguish between:

  • compatible espresso-machine brand;
  • exact machine/model application;
  • OEM reference;
  • actual component manufacturer, where known;
  • OEM/original or compatible status;
  • Brooks product reference.

“Single” does not define a pressurized or non-pressurized system

The term “single portafilter” describes the portafilter configuration. It does not by itself determine whether the complete coffee system uses a pressurized or non-pressurized basket or another pressure-control design.

Do not use “single” as a substitute for the technical specification of the basket or brewing system.

A single portafilter is not identified by appearance alone

Chrome-plated portafilters with similar black handles and single spouts can look almost identical while using different locking geometries.

Where possible, combine:

  • machine manufacturer;
  • exact model/version;
  • OEM reference;
  • brewing group/locking system;
  • number of locking lugs;
  • lug orientation;
  • lug thickness;
  • portafilter/body system;
  • single-spout type and connection;
  • included filter basket and retaining spring;
  • listed machine applications.

Portafilter gasket and locking position

If a correctly specified single portafilter rotates unusually far, becomes tight much earlier than expected or leaks around the brewing group during extraction, the portafilter gasket can also be relevant.

A worn or incorrectly specified group gasket should not automatically be compensated for by choosing a different portafilter. Identify the portafilter and gasket independently.

For other components in the group assembly, see espresso machine brewing-group parts.

Cleaning and service

Remove the filter basket and coffee spout where appropriate and clean the portafilter according to the instructions of the espresso-machine and cleaning-product manufacturers.

Avoid automatically immersing the handle or decorative handle materials unless they are suitable for the chosen cleaning method.

Availability

Availability and lead time vary by single portafilter, manufacturer and machine application. Use the individual product page for the current product status, supplied components and complete available technical specifications.
