You do have 2 types of single portafilter basket, that is the regular version. You can find that one with any espresso machine. But you also have the competition filter baskets.
Sizes of single filterbaskets.
With filterbaskets you always talk about 2 sizes, the outer diameter and the height of the. The most common size of filterbasket is the 70mm basket. This basket can be found on espresso machine brands such as Faema, La Marzocco, Slayer, Nuova Simonelli, Bezzera, La Pavoni and so on. These single filterbaskets have a height ranging from approx. 20mm up to 25mm.
A less used size is the 68mm is found on espresso machines of La Cimbali, in some cases also on some models of Faema. These baskets are made in one height which is 18mm.
The smaller sizes of filterbasket are made for espresso machine brands such as Spaziale, La San Marco and some models of Astoria and Wega espresso machines. These baskets have a outer diameter of 65mm. These baskets are a bit higher, around 25mm.
Note: some brands do use multiple sizes of filterbaskets such as Astoria, Wega, La Marzocco
Amount of coffee
The amount of coffee what a single filterbasket can hold is quite limited, which makes sense seen it is only the amount of coffee for 1 espresso. There are 2 types for single filter basket, they can hold 6 or 7 grams of ground coffee. The difference with the double filter baskets is more then with the single filterbaskets.
Specialty/competition coffee baskets
These specialty coffee baskets are about 3-4 times the price of a “regular” coffee filter basket. They are made in all the sizes described above. But they have features improved perforation area, the amount of holes and the shape of them. Next to that the baskets have been electropolished. In most cases this all doesn’t say that much, but you do notice the difference when you use them.
