Espresso machine nipples and double-male fittings

Espresso machine nipples are straight fittings with male threads on both sides, used to connect valves, pumps, hydraulic fittings and other threaded components. The correct nipple is determined by more than the nominal thread size: check the thread standard on both sides, thread size, reducing or equal-size configuration, fitting length and the original sealing method.

Most nipples in this category use parallel BSP-G threads, including equal-size connections such as 1/4" M × 1/4" M and 3/8" M × 3/8" M, as well as reducing versions such as 1/8" M × 1/4" M, 1/4" M × 3/8" M and 3/8" M × 1/2" M.

Do not select a fitting from the inch size alone. This category also includes nipples that connect different thread systems, such as 3/8" BSP-G to 3/8" NPT and 3/8" BSP-G to M18×1.5.

How to select the correct espresso machine nipple

A nipple may look like one of the simplest fittings in an espresso machine, but visually similar parts are not necessarily interchangeable. A correct replacement must reproduce the important characteristics of the original connection.

Use this selection order:

connection/application → thread standard side 1 → thread size side 1 → thread standard side 2 → thread size side 2 → fitting geometry and length → sealing method

Check both sides of the fitting

The nipples in this category have external or male threads on both ends. This is sometimes described as an MM or male-male fitting.

That does not mean both ends are necessarily identical.

An equal-size nipple can connect two ports with the same thread, for example:

A reducing nipple still has male threads on both sides, but the two connection sizes are different. Examples include 1/8" M × 1/4" M, 1/8" M × 3/8" M, 1/4" M × 3/8" M and 3/8" M × 1/2" M.

Always identify both sides before ordering.

BSP-G thread size is a nominal size

BSP-G sizes such as 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4" are nominal pipe-thread designations. They should not be interpreted as the outside diameter you expect to measure directly across the male thread.

This is important when identifying an unknown nipple with calipers. A measured thread diameter will not simply equal the nominal BSP-G fraction printed in the product specification.

Where possible, compare the replacement with:

  • the original spare part;
  • the machine parts diagram;
  • the OEM reference;
  • the thread specification of the mating component;
  • the fitting geometry.

Do not choose a nipple simply because its measured diameter looks close.

Equal-size and reducing BSP-G nipples

A straight equal-size nipple connects two female ports of the same nominal size. A 1/4" × 1/4" BSP-G nipple, for example, has male 1/4" BSP-G connections on both sides.

A reducing nipple changes connection size while remaining male on both ends. The 1/4" × 3/8" nipple therefore connects a female 1/4" BSP-G port to a female 3/8" BSP-G port.

The reduction is part of the hydraulic layout of the machine. Replacing a reducing nipple with an equal-size fitting, or adapting the connection with additional fittings without checking the original design, can change component position, available installation space and sealing geometry.

BSP-G and NPT are not interchangeable

One of the most useful examples in this category is the 3/8" BSP-G M × 3/8" NPT M nipple.

Both sides are described as 3/8 inch, but they belong to different thread systems.

BSP-G is a parallel pipe thread. NPT uses a different thread form and sealing principle. A matching nominal inch designation therefore does not mean that BSP-G and NPT components can be substituted for each other.

This matters especially around pumps and other hydraulic components where different thread standards can meet within the same espresso machine.

If one side of the original nipple is NPT, replace it with the correct NPT connection rather than selecting an all-BSP nipple because both are marked 3/8".

BSP-G to metric nipples

Not every espresso machine connection uses a pipe thread.

The Astoria/Wega 3/8" BSP-G M × M18×1.5 fitting is a good example. One side uses 3/8" BSP-G while the other uses an M18×1.5 metric thread.

A metric thread should never be identified only by its measured diameter. The thread pitch is also part of the specification: M18×1.5 means an 18 mm nominal metric diameter with a 1.5 mm pitch.

When replacing this type of nipple, match the complete thread specification on both sides.

Fitting length and geometry also matter

Two nipples can have the same thread specification and still be different parts.

The extended 3/8" M × 3/8" M nipple, for example, uses 3/8" BSP-G male connections but has a different geometry from a standard 3/8" × 3/8" nipple.

The extra length can determine:

  • how far a valve or fitting sits from the boiler or frame;
  • whether adjacent components have enough clearance;
  • the orientation of connected pipework;
  • whether a component reaches its original mounting position.

For that reason, matching only 3/8" M × 3/8" M is not sufficient when the original machine uses an extended nipple.

Reproduce the original fitting length and geometry whenever these dimensions affect the installation.

How BSP-G connections seal

BSP-G is a parallel thread. The presence of a BSP-G thread alone does not tell you exactly how the connection is sealed.

Depending on the original espresso machine design, sealing may take place against a:

  • flat gasket;
  • copper sealing washer;
  • bonded or other sealing washer;
  • machined sealing face;
  • cone or seat;
  • manufacturer-specified sealing arrangement.

The thread provides the mechanical connection, while another surface may provide the actual pressure seal.

For this reason, do not assume that every BSP-G nipple should automatically be sealed by wrapping the threads with PTFE tape or applying liquid thread sealant. First inspect how the original connection was designed to seal and reproduce that arrangement.

An NPT connection works differently, so a nipple that combines BSP-G and NPT may require a different sealing method at each end.

Avoid cross-threading during installation

Before tightening a replacement nipple, confirm that both mating threads are clean and undamaged.

Start the fitting by hand. It should engage correctly without excessive force. Resistance after only a small amount of rotation can indicate the wrong size, the wrong thread system or cross-threading.

Do not try to make a BSP-G fitting fit an NPT or metric port by tightening it harder. Damage to a valve body, pump connection or other threaded component can be considerably more expensive than the nipple itself.

After installation, pressure-test the connection and inspect it for leakage.

Generic and OEM applications

Many brass nipples are generic hydraulic parts and may be used by several espresso machine manufacturers. A nipple being listed for multiple brands is therefore not by itself a compatibility problem.

For generic fittings, the most important checks are the two thread specifications, geometry, length and sealing arrangement.

Other nipples are more application-specific. The Astoria/Wega M18×1.5 fitting is one example, while the extended 3/8" × 3/8" nipple is associated with specific applications.

When an OEM reference is available, use it together with the technical dimensions rather than relying on machine brand alone.

Nipple, adapter or elbow?

Choose the fitting category from the job the part performs.

A nipple has male connections at both ends and joins two female threaded components in a straight line.

Use an adapter when the original connection requires another male/female configuration or a different adapter geometry.

Use a T or elbow fitting when the hydraulic circuit changes direction or branches into multiple connections.

Use a threaded plug when the intended function is to close a port rather than connect two components.

Final check before ordering

Before selecting an espresso machine nipple, verify:

thread standard on side 1 → thread size on side 1 → thread standard on side 2 → thread size on side 2 → equal or reducing size → standard or extended geometry → original sealing method → OEM or machine application where available

Do not select on nominal size or visual similarity alone. Especially with BSP-G, NPT and metric threads, two fittings can look very similar while being technically incompatible.
