Portafilters can look almost identical while using different locking geometries. A matching nominal diameter, similar handle or even the same espresso-machine brand does not prove that a portafilter will lock correctly into the brewing group.
Where possible, identify the replacement in this order:
machine manufacturer → exact model/version → OEM reference → brewing group/locking system → number of locking lugs → lug orientation → lug thickness → basket/body size → portafilter type → spout connection → listed application
The machine manufacturer and exact model are normally the strongest starting points. Use espresso machine parts by brand and model to narrow the selection before comparing individual portafilter dimensions.
Do not assume that every espresso machine from one manufacturer uses the same portafilter. Different brewing groups and locking systems can be used within the same brand.
If an OEM reference is available on the original part, exploded view or service documentation, use it together with the technical specifications.
A size such as 58 mm is commonly associated with espresso-machine baskets and tampers, but it does not describe the complete bayonet connection between the portafilter and brewing group.
Two portafilters associated with a similar nominal basket size can still differ in:
Do not select a replacement solely because it is described as a “58 mm portafilter”. Confirm the machine or brewing-group application and the complete locking geometry.
The locking lugs on the side of the portafilter engage with the brewing group. Several lug specifications can determine whether the portafilter locks correctly.
Many commercial espresso-machine portafilters use two locking lugs, but three-lug systems also exist. The number of lugs must correspond to the locking system used by the brewing group.
Portafilters in the Brooks assortment include, among others, locking-lug orientations of 45° and 90°. This specification describes the position of the lugs around the portafilter body and helps distinguish between different locking geometries.
Lug thickness is another important fit specification. Portafilters that look similar can use different lug thicknesses and therefore be intended for different brewing groups or machine versions.
Always use lug thickness together with the machine application, OEM reference, number of lugs and lug orientation. Lug thickness alone does not confirm compatibility.
The terms E61 and E61-style are used for several traditional brewing-group designs, but they should not be treated as one universal portafilter standard.
A useful example is the Faema E61 Legend/Jubilee double portafilter. It has two locking lugs positioned at 90° with a lug thickness of 6.3 mm. The Faema OEM reference is 2771-135 803. This version is intended for the Faema E61 Legend and Jubilé applications and is not the same portafilter used on the vintage Faema E61.
The Faema bottomless portafilter, Brooks reference 49-351-L-1165183, also has 90° locking lugs, but these are 7.2 mm thick. It is listed for various Faema and E61-style applications but is specifically not suitable for the Faema E61 Legend and Jubilé.
This shows why:

A machine manufacturer can use different brewing-group designs across its product range. Selecting only by brand is therefore not sufficient.
For example, the La Cimbali single portafilter, Brooks reference 50-764-L-1165308 and Cimbali OEM reference 537-027-100, has locking lugs positioned at 90° with a thickness of 5.5 mm. It is listed for various La Cimbali models, while other Cimbali machines can use different brewing-group geometries.
The exact model, brewing group and OEM reference are therefore more useful than the machine brand alone.
Cross-brand compatibility is possible when different machines use the same or compatible locking geometry, but this is not a universal rule.
The La Spaziale single portafilter, Brooks reference 50-773-L-5114874, uses 90° locking lugs with a thickness of 6 mm and is listed for a range of La Spaziale machines.
Use cross-brand compatibility only when the technical specifications, OEM references or listed machine applications support it.
Once the correct brewing-group and locking geometry has been identified, select the required portafilter configuration.
A single portafilter is normally configured for a single coffee outlet and a corresponding single filter basket. Always check the individual product page to see which components are included.
A double portafilter is generally configured with a double coffee spout and a double filter basket, but the exact assembly and included components vary by product.
Do not assume that a single and double portafilter always use exactly the same body with only the spout changed. Some machine families share body geometries, but the OEM reference and stated application remain the stronger identifiers.
A bottomless portafilter has no conventional closed base and coffee spout beneath the filter basket. This changes the lower part of the portafilter, but it does not change the locking requirements at the brewing group.
A bottomless portafilter is therefore not automatically suitable for every espresso machine using a similar nominal basket size. Brewing-group geometry, number of lugs, lug orientation, lug thickness and machine application still need to match.
The portafilter must lock correctly into the brewing group, while the filter basket must fit correctly inside the portafilter body. These are two different mechanical interfaces.
A compatible portafilter does not mean that every filter basket will fit it. For the basket, compare specifications such as external rim diameter, basket-body diameter, overall height, retention style and listed application.
A bottomless portafilter can provide additional clearance underneath a deeper basket because there is no conventional base or spout below it, but the basket must still match the dimensions and retention system of the portafilter.
Many portafilters use a stainless-steel spring to retain the filter basket inside the body. If the portafilter fits the brewing group correctly but the basket is no longer held securely, the portafilter spring may need to be inspected.
Select a replacement spring from the technical design and listed application rather than from the nominal filter-basket size alone.
On single and double portafilters, the coffee spout can often be replaced separately. In addition to choosing a single or double outlet, check the thread connection between the spout and portafilter body.
Connections found in this product group include 3/8" BSP-G and M16. These are different thread systems and must not be treated as interchangeable.
For a replacement portafilter spout, use this selection order:
spout configuration → thread standard → thread size → compatible portafilter body → OEM/application
Always check the individual product page. Depending on the product, a portafilter assembly can include:
Do not assume that every complete portafilter in the category is supplied with the same components.
An OEM/original portafilter is supplied under, or directly corresponds to, the original machine manufacturer's part reference. A compatible portafilter is supplied as an alternative for a confirmed application.
Compatible does not mean universal. A compatible portafilter must still match the brewing group, locking geometry, required dimensions and machine application.
Where available, use the OEM reference together with the Brooks reference and technical specifications when identifying the replacement.
The same portafilter can legitimately be listed for more than one espresso-machine brand when those machines use the same or compatible brewing-group and locking geometry.
This does not mean that portafilters with the same nominal diameter are automatically interchangeable. Cross-brand compatibility should be confirmed by the technical specification and listed machine application.
If an existing portafilter is correct for the brewing group but locks too far, becomes tight unusually early or leaks during extraction, the condition and dimensions of the portafilter gasket can also be relevant.

Do not use a different portafilter as an automatic solution for a worn or incorrectly specified group gasket. Identify the portafilter and gasket separately.
