How to find the correct La San Marco spare part

La San Marco has produced professional espresso machines in many versions and group configurations. One component may be used across several machine families, while another visually similar part may only fit a particular model or production version.

Before ordering, check:

  • the complete La San Marco model name;
  • the machine series or version;
  • whether the machine is manual, volumetric or lever operated;
  • the number of brewing groups;
  • the machine voltage;

Depending on the model, volumetric control can involve:

  • additional wiring and connectors.

Mechanical group components may sometimes be shared between manual and volumetric versions, while the control system is different. Always identify the exact version before selecting electronic parts.

La San Marco brewing-group parts

The brewing group contains several components that are subject to heat, pressure, water and mechanical wear. Common service items include portafilter gaskets, shower screens, diffusers, jets, seals, solenoid valves and fittings.

Water leaking around the portafilter is often associated with a worn group gasket, but the gasket is not the only possible cause. Also check:

  • wear on the portafilter locking ears;

Many traditional La San Marco commercial brewing groups use a characteristic three-ear portafilter locking configuration. Ear thickness and exact locking dimensions can differ, so a visually similar three-ear portafilter is not automatically suitable.

Before ordering a replacement portafilter, check:

  • the La San Marco machine model;
  • the number and orientation of the locking ears;
  • the thickness of the ears;
  • the position in which the portafilter locks;
  • the filter-basket diameter;
  • the original part reference where available.

Single, double and bottomless portafilters are available for compatible La San Marco brewing groups. Filter baskets can also be shared across several San Marco machines when their dimensions and locking system correspond.

Pumps and pump motors

Professional La San Marco pump-operated espresso machines commonly use a rotary-vane pump driven by an electric motor. Pumps from specialist manufacturers can be used on different espresso machine brands when flow capacity, mounting and connections correspond.

For this reason, a pump does not need to be branded La San Marco to be correct for the machine.

Before replacing a pump or motor, check:

  • pump capacity;
  • clamp or flange mounting;
  • inlet and outlet threads;
  • flow direction;
  • motor voltage and phase;
  • shaft and coupling arrangement.

A machine that does not build the correct pressure does not automatically need a new pump. Also inspect the water supply, pump bypass, inlet valves, non-return valves and possible restrictions in the hydraulic circuit.

Boilers and heating elements

La San Marco commercial machines have been produced with different boiler sizes and heating configurations depending on the model, number of groups and electrical specification.

Before ordering a heating element, check:

  • the complete machine model;
  • the number of brewing groups;
  • the machine voltage;
  • the element voltage and wattage;
  • the flange dimensions;
  • the immersed length;
  • the number and position of electrical terminals;
  • the La San Marco part number.

A boiler that does not heat does not automatically have a defective heating element. Depending on the machine, the problem can also involve a pressure switch, thermostat, safety thermostat, contactor, relay, control board or electrical connection.

Steam and hot-water valves

Steam and hot-water valves contain several wear components, including valve shafts, PTFE seals, flat gaskets, O-rings, springs, bushes, cams, handles and steam tubes.

A valve that continues to leak while closed can have a worn internal seal or valve seat. Difficult operation can be caused by contamination, scale, shaft wear or damaged internal components.

Different La San Marco series can share individual valve components without using exactly the same complete valve. Compare the original reference, dimensions and valve construction.

Solenoid valves

La San Marco machines use solenoid valves for functions such as brewing-group operation, automatic boiler filling and other water-control functions.

Solenoid valves from manufacturers such as Parker or other specialist valve manufacturers can be used by several espresso machine brands. Compatibility depends on the actual specification rather than the brand name printed on the valve.

Before ordering, check:

  • coil voltage;
  • two-way or three-way configuration;
  • thread or flange mounting;
  • inlet and outlet arrangement;
  • flow direction;
  • position and function in the machine;
  • the original La San Marco reference where available.

A solenoid-valve fault is not always caused by the coil. Scale, debris or a blocked valve core can produce similar symptoms.

Automatic boiler filling and water-level control

Professional La San Marco machines can use automatic boiler-level control to maintain the correct amount of water in the steam boiler.

The system can include:

  • a level probe;
  • an electronic level regulator;
  • an inlet solenoid valve;
  • water-inlet components;
  • electrical wiring.

If the boiler does not fill, overfills or fills intermittently, inspect the complete circuit before replacing the level controller. Scale on the probe, a blocked water inlet, a defective valve or poor electrical contact can produce similar symptoms.

Sight glasses and boiler water level

Many traditional commercial espresso machines use a sight glass to give a direct visual indication of the water level in the boiler.

A sight-glass assembly can contain:

  • the glass tube;
  • upper and lower fittings;
  • sight-glass gaskets;
  • washers and sleeves;
  • protective components.

When replacing these parts, compare glass diameter, length, fitting dimensions and gasket type. Work on a boiler sight glass only when the machine is completely cold and fully depressurised.

Pressure switches, safety components and gauges

La San Marco machines can use mechanical pressure switches to control boiler pressure and gauges to display boiler and pump pressure.

When selecting a pressure switch, check:

  • pressure range;
  • electrical rating;
  • single- or three-phase application;
  • thread connection;
  • mounting arrangement.

For a pressure gauge, compare the pressure scale, dial diameter, fitting position, pipe or capillary connection and mounting dimensions.

Safety valves and other boiler safety components must match the required pressure specification and connection. Do not replace a safety component solely because another part has the same thread size.

Flowmeters, dosing devices and touch panels

Volumetric La San Marco machines use electrical and electronic components to control automatic coffee dosing.

Depending on the machine, this system can contain:

  • flowmeters;
  • dosing devices;
  • push-button panels;
