Applications of the tamp mat
The use of a tamper mat has become increasingly common in recent years, initially in the hospitality industry but also among home baristas. The main reason is to protect your working surface and keep your accessories neat and tidy. Since tamper mats are made of silicone or nbr rubber, it ensures that your tamper won't get scratched, you can always take a tamper stand for that as well.
Besides, it also depends on what model you have, as it can also serve as a collection tray for your coffee grinder. In fact, as a replacement for the stainless steel or plastic coffee grit collection trays you normally get with your coffee grinder.
Catering tamper mat
The situation for catering tamper mats is slightly different from the ones used in a home situation. Since a bar or hotel serves many more coffees and espressos, a tamper mat will also wear much faster. This is why we recommend a model that is a bit thicker and which is a corner mat. Given that tamper corner mats ensure that your worktop will not get damaged.
Our advice is to look at the tamper mats from either Motta or those from Cafelat, these are comparatively a bit more durable than those used in a home situation.
Tamping mat for the home barista
A tamper mat suitable for home use needs to meet far fewer requirements than one used very intensively in the catering industry. The advantage is that these are therefore also in a somewhat more favourable price range, but they are often also a little less thick than, for example, those from cafelat. You can also place the tamper mat in front of your beating tray, so that you use the entire surface of your worktop.
Brands and types of tamper mat
There are a variety of tamper mat models, but essentially it remains nothing but just a piece of rubber. In essence, there are 2 types, that is the flat tamper mat and the tamper mat which has an angle.
A good example of a corner tamper mat is the Motta tamping mat, which you can place against the edge of the countertop. The option for a flat tamper mat is the one made by Cafelat, the Cafelat flat tamper mat.
How do I clean a tamper mat?
Cleaning your tamper mat is very simple, just a soapy bowl of warm water. Nice that it mentions that the tamper mat would be dishwasher safe, which is only the case with certain settings and cleaning agents.
Just clean the tampermat with warm water and a grease solvent, such as dreft, and then dry and you're done. You can also use the Puly caff solution where you soak your filter carrier in, add the tamper mat and then it's just rinse and dry.
