Espresso machine filter baskets

Find filter baskets for professional and domestic espresso machines, including single, double and blind baskets as well as standard and precision/competition versions. The correct basket should be selected from the machine or portafilter application first, followed by the basket dimensions and intended dose.

If you know the espresso machine you are working on, start with espresso machine parts by brand and model and compare the OEM reference where available.

If you already know which type of basket you need, browse single filter baskets, double filter baskets or blind filter baskets.

Do not identify a filter basket from a single measurement such as “58 mm”, outer diameter or coffee dose. External rim diameter, basket body diameter, overall height and recommended tamper diameter are different specifications.

A useful selection order is:

machine/model or OEM reference → single, double or blind → external rim diameter → body diameter → overall height → dose range → ridged or ridgeless → tamper diameter → standard or precision/competition → listed application

Filter baskets are part of the wider espresso machine parts range. For the complete holder assembly see portafilters, and for basket retention components see filter basket springs.

How to find the correct espresso machine filter basket

Filter baskets can look very similar while differing in dimensions, profile, capacity and machine application. A matching coffee dose or tamper diameter alone does not confirm that a basket will fit the portafilter correctly.

Where possible, identify the replacement in this order:

machine manufacturer → exact model/version → OEM reference → basket function → external rim diameter → body diameter → height → dose range → ridge type → tamper size → listed application

1. Start with the espresso machine or OEM reference

The machine manufacturer and exact model are normally the strongest starting points. Use espresso machine parts by brand and model to narrow the selection before comparing basket dimensions.

Do not assume that every machine from one manufacturer uses the same portafilter or basket. Different brewing groups can be used within the same brand, and basket dimensions can therefore vary between models or production versions.

If an OEM part number is available from the original basket, machine parts diagram or service documentation, use it together with the physical specifications.

Single, double and blind filter baskets

The first functional distinction is whether the basket is intended for brewing a single dose, brewing a double dose or for cleaning the brewing group.

Single filter baskets

Single filter baskets are designed for smaller coffee doses. They are available in different external diameters, heights and internal profiles, so “single” is a function and not a complete fit specification.

For example, the single basket with Brooks reference 35-015-L-1160050 and IMS reference CM1T007 has a 70 mm external diameter, a height of 19.5 mm and uses a 58 mm tamper. It is listed for various Astoria and Wega applications, while specific machines with smaller brewing groups require different baskets.

This example also shows why a basket described in relation to a 58 mm tamper is not physically 58 mm across its outer rim.

Double filter baskets

Double filter baskets are intended for larger doses and are generally deeper than single baskets. However, dose capacity alone does not determine whether a double basket fits a particular portafilter.

Compare the complete geometry including the external rim, basket body and overall height. A deeper basket can also require sufficient clearance inside the portafilter body.

Blind filter baskets

A blind filter basket has no perforated brewing area. It is used in suitable espresso machines for backflushing the brewing-group circuit rather than for brewing coffee.

Blind baskets still have application-specific dimensions. For example, the stainless steel blind basket with IMS reference CFFC065 and Brooks reference 35-013-L-1160339 has a 70 mm external diameter and a height of 17 mm. It is listed for many machine applications, but not for every espresso-machine group.

Do not assume that one blind basket is universal simply because many commercial machines use a similar portafilter size.

External diameter, body diameter and tamper size are different measurements

One of the most common sources of confusion when selecting a filter basket is the use of numbers such as “58 mm”. Depending on the context, this can refer to the approximate tamper or internal basket size rather than the outside diameter of the basket rim.

Three measurements should be kept separate:

  • External rim diameter — the widest diameter at the top edge of the basket;
  • Basket body diameter — the diameter of the section that sits inside the portafilter;
  • Tamper diameter — the recommended diameter of the tamper inside the basket.

These values are not interchangeable.

For example, the IMS Competition basket B682TH24.5M, Brooks reference 50-451-L-1460106, has an external rim diameter of 68 mm, a body diameter of 60 mm, a height of 24.5 mm and uses a 58 mm tamper. It is therefore incorrect to identify the complete basket simply as a “58 mm basket”.

Basket height is part of the fit

Overall basket height affects both coffee capacity and the physical space required inside the portafilter. Two baskets with the same external rim diameter can have substantially different heights.

Always compare basket height with the original component or a confirmed machine application. A deeper basket should not automatically be treated as an upgrade for a shallower basket.

The available space can also depend on the portafilter design, including whether the holder has a conventional closed base or a bottomless configuration.

Coffee dose does not determine compatibility

Filter baskets are often described with a nominal or recommended coffee dose such as 6 g, 14 g, 12–18 g or 18–21 g. This is useful when selecting the required basket capacity, but it is not a mechanical fit specification.

Two baskets intended for a similar coffee dose can have different:

  • external rim diameters;
  • body diameters;
  • heights;
  • profiles;
  • ridge configurations;
  • tamper requirements;
  • machine applications.

Select the basket from confirmed fit specifications first and use the dose range to choose between suitable capacities.

Ridged and ridgeless filter baskets

Filter baskets can be manufactured with or without a retention ridge around the side of the basket.

A ridged basket has a formed groove or ridge that interacts with the filter basket spring in the portafilter. A ridgeless basket has a smoother external wall without this formed ridge.

Do not assume that all espresso-machine filter baskets are ridged. Precision and competition baskets can also be supplied in ridgeless configurations.

The IMS B682TH24.5M mentioned above is one example of a ridgeless double competition basket. In addition to the ridge configuration, it has a 68 mm external rim, 60 mm body, 24.5 mm height, 12–18 g stated capacity range and a 58 mm tamper specification.

If the basket does not stay securely in the portafilter, also inspect the filter basket spring. The spring itself is a separate component and should not be identified from basket diameter alone.

Standard and precision or competition filter baskets

The assortment includes conventional replacement baskets as well as precision or competition baskets. These are different product series and should not be treated as interchangeable solely because their nominal size looks similar.

Precision baskets can use specific body geometries, perforation patterns and recommended tamper dimensions. These characteristics can influence coffee preparation, but they do not override the basic requirement that the basket must fit the portafilter and brewing-group application.

For example, the IMS B682TH24.5M is a Competition-series basket. Its specification differs from a standard double basket even though both may be intended for a similar espresso-machine format.

Do not assume that changing from a standard basket to a precision basket is automatically an upgrade for every machine or coffee recipe. First confirm mechanical fit, then choose the basket series and capacity required for the application.

A real basket example: specification → difference → application

The following examples show why multiple specifications should be combined:

  • single basket → 70 mm external diameter → 19.5 mm height → 58 mm tamper → IMS CM1T007 → Brooks 35-015-L-1160050 → various Astoria/Wega applications → single filter baskets
  • double Competition basket → 68 mm external rim → 60 mm body → 24.5 mm height → ridgeless → 58 mm tamper → IMS B682TH24.5M → Brooks 50-451-L-1460106 → Carimali/La Cimbali/Gaggia/Reneka applications → double filter baskets
  • blind basket → no brewing perforations → 70 mm external diameter → 17 mm height → IMS CFFC065 → Brooks 35-013-L-1160339 → multiple compatible machine applications → blind filter baskets

Material, diameter or dose alone does not make these products interchangeable.

Filter basket manufacturer versus espresso machine manufacturer

The manufacturer of the filter basket does not always have to be the manufacturer of the espresso machine. A machine manufacturer can use a basket produced by a specialised component manufacturer, and the same basket specification can occur across several machine brands.

For that reason, distinguish between:

  • the espresso machine manufacturer and compatible machine application;
  • the basket manufacturer or product brand;
  • the OEM machine reference;
  • the basket manufacturer's own reference;
  • the Brooks product reference.

This is especially useful with baskets produced by manufacturers such as IMS Filtri, where one technical basket specification can correspond to applications from more than one espresso-machine brand.

OEM and compatible filter baskets

An OEM/original basket is supplied under, or directly corresponds to, the original machine manufacturer's reference. A compatible basket is supplied as an alternative for the same confirmed application.

Compatible does not mean universal. A compatible basket still needs to match the required dimensions, profile, capacity and portafilter application.

Where OEM and basket-manufacturer references are both available, use those references together with the technical specifications rather than relying only on appearance.

Shared applications across different espresso-machine brands

Cross-brand applications are normal for filter baskets when several machines use compatible portafilter and basket dimensions. The same component can therefore legitimately be listed for more than one espresso-machine manufacturer.

This does not mean that all baskets with the same external diameter are interchangeable. Always confirm the listed machine application and compare the full basket geometry.

Do not identify a filter basket from appearance alone

Many stainless steel filter baskets look nearly identical in product photographs. Differences of only a few millimetres in diameter or height can still determine whether a basket fits correctly.

Where possible, combine:

  • machine manufacturer;
  • exact model or brewing-group application;
  • OEM reference;
  • single, double or blind function;
  • external rim diameter;
  • basket body diameter;
  • overall height;
  • recommended dose range;
  • ridged or ridgeless construction;
  • recommended tamper diameter;
  • standard or precision/competition series;
  • listed machine compatibility.

Filter basket springs and portafilters

The filter basket is only one part of the complete portafilter assembly. The basket is normally retained by a spring fitted into the portafilter body.

If the existing basket fits but is no longer retained correctly, inspect the filter basket spring rather than automatically replacing the basket.

If the complete holder is damaged or the basket application is uncertain, compare the portafilter itself, including the machine/group compatibility and available basket space.

Availability

Availability and lead time vary by basket type, manufacturer and specification. Use the individual product page for the current product status and the complete list of available technical data and machine applications.
