History of La Pavoni Macchine da caffé

La Pavoni is one of the oldest operational espresso machine manufacturers in the world. The company started in 1905. In that period the espresso machines where vertical machines driven on the boiler pressure.

After the war the La Pavoni Model D.P. 47 was designed, this machine was designed by Gio Ponti. After these models they also started to use the lever brewing groups. Earky examples of these machines are the La Pavoni Lilliput, La Pavoni model 53, La Pavoni Concorso and later the La Pavoni Brasilia. Currently La Pavoni still produces commercial Lever espresso machines.

Models

The Italian coffee machine maker La Pavoni has build over the years a variety of commercial and domestic coffee machines. But oddly enough they are nowadays mainly famous about their domestic coffee machines. This can be lever operated ones or semi automatic coffee machines.

La Pavoni Europiccola

One of the most iconic espresso machines every made, the La Pavoni Europiccola. This espresso machine is a lever operated espresso machine, with a steam tube. This espresso machine originates from the 1960’s, and is still in production.  Over the years there have been some design changes and improvements. But the basis of this coffee machine has remained the same.

La Pavoni Professional

The La Pavoni Professional is basically a bigger version of the La Pavoni Europiccola coffee machine. It is fitted with a bigger boiler, and originally also with a thermostat. Which was not standard on the La Pavoni Europiccola. The idea that the Professional is for commercial use, that’s not true. It is basically a domestic lever espresso machine with just a bit of extra capacity. The advantage between these espresso machines is that, most of the spare parts are interchangeable with eachother.

La Pavoni various parts

The components used on La Pavoni espresso machines are in quite of situations unique to the La Pavoni brand itself, but there are various universal parts used on those espresso machines.

Portafilters for Pavoni brewing groups.

Which type of portafilter you can use on your La Pavoni brewing group does depend on which model you have. When you have a domestic lever espresso machine, you need to take in account if you have a pre-millenium or a millennium brewing group. Seen those are not interchangeable with eachother. This is also the case with the semi automatic domestic La Pavoni models. They have a different size, nor can you use a commercial grade portafilter.

The commercial types of portafilters have different dimensions, they are bigger, so they won’t fit on the domestic versions of the La Pavoni coffee machines.
