Types of Models of the Classe 5
The Rancilio Classe 5 is available in two primary types, similar to most espresso machine brands:
- Volumetric models known as USB
- Non-volumetric models known as S
Both the USB and S models are available in 1, 2, and 3 group configurations, with a compact 2-group version also available. Additionally, you can find Tall versions of these machines, specifically designed for tall cups and takeaway coffee services.
Rancilio Classe 5 USB
The Classe 5 USB is the volumetric model, and it's the most common version in the series. It features a mechanical valve for both the water outlet and steam wands. The steam wand can be upgraded to a Rancilio C-lever, a unique valve found only on Rancilio espresso machines. For even more automation, you can opt for the I-steam, an automatic steam wand that enables you to froth milk for lattes or cappuccinos with less time and experience required.
Rancilio Classe 5 S
The Rancilio Classe 5 S is the non-volumetric version of the series. While it shares many similarities with the Classe 5 USB, there are some notable differences. The most significant is that the Classe 5 S only has an on/off button to start and stop the brewing process, making it simpler but less automated. Additionally, the C-lever steam valve is not available on this model.
Rancilio Classe 5 Leva
For baristas who prefer a more traditional approach, Rancilio still produces Lever espresso machines, and the Classe 5 Leva is one of those models. Lever machines are still favored by some for the manual control they provide over the brewing process. The Classe 5 Leva is available in 2, 3, and 4 group versions. While many parts are interchangeable with the other Classe 5 models, the brewing group parts on the Leva are unique to this version.
Technical Specifications of the Classe 5
As mentioned, the Classe 5 comes in a range of versions, all with varying capacity requirements. For the 1 and 2 group USB and S models, there is a 110V version available for the American market. The larger models operate on 220/240V or 380V. It’s important to check the voltage requirements to ensure compatibility with your location's electrical setup.
The smallest 1-group espresso machine features a 4L boiler, while the largest 4-group model comes with a 22L boiler. Choosing the right size model can have a big impact on your energy consumption and overall performance, so it's essential to select the right configuration for your needs.
