Which espresso machine brewing group part do you need?

An espresso machine brewing group contains mechanical, hydraulic and sealing components. Some parts, such as portafilter gaskets and shower screens, are routine service items. Other components, including valves, heat exchangers, group bodies and solenoid valves, are generally replaced during repairs or a complete overhaul.

Start by identifying the exact espresso machine manufacturer and model. When available, use the original manufacturer part number as the main reference. Do not select a component only because the product photograph resembles the part installed in your machine.

Portafilter gaskets

The portafilter gasket seals the connection between the portafilter and the brewing group. A worn, hardened or incorrectly sized gasket can cause water to leak around the portafilter. It can also cause the portafilter to close too far to the left or right.

When selecting a portafilter gasket, check the outside diameter, inside diameter, thickness, profile and material. A small difference in thickness can significantly change the locking position of the portafilter.

Some machines also use a separate group gasket or gasket shim. A shim can compensate for wear in the locking system, but it does not make an otherwise incompatible gasket suitable.

Silicone portafilter gaskets

Silicone portafilter gaskets remain flexible and are available for various commercial and domestic espresso machines. They are not automatically interchangeable with every rubber gasket of a similar diameter.

Check the exact profile, thickness and compatible machine models. The correct diameter alone does not confirm that a silicone gasket will seal or lock correctly.

Espresso machine shower screens

The shower screen distributes water over the coffee bed and helps prevent coffee particles from entering the internal passages of the brewing group. Shower screens differ in diameter, depth, shape and mounting method.

Some shower screens are secured with a central screw. Others are held in position by the portafilter gasket or a separate mounting component. Compare the outside diameter, centre-hole size, overall height and fixing method with the existing screen.

Brewing group diffusers and shower holders

The diffuser or shower holder is positioned behind the shower screen and distributes water inside the brewing group. Depending on the design, it may also secure the shower screen in position.

Diffusers can differ in diameter, thread, water passages, mounting design and material. Two diffusers intended for shower screens of the same diameter are not necessarily interchangeable.

Brewing group valves

Mechanical brewing groups can contain inlet, infusion and exhaust valves. These assemblies may consist of valve shafts, seals, springs, guides and separate valve seats. Wear, scale or damaged seals can prevent a valve from moving or closing correctly.

Check the complete valve design instead of selecting individual parts only by appearance. Shaft length, seal diameter, spring dimensions and thread must correspond with the relevant brewing-group version.

Brewing group springs

Springs are used in mechanical valves, lever mechanisms and other moving parts of the brewing group. Springs with the same outside diameter can have different lengths, wire thicknesses and compression characteristics.

Select a replacement spring by espresso machine model, original reference and stated dimensions. Do not shorten or modify a spring to make it fit another valve assembly.

Brewing group solenoid valves

Many electronically controlled espresso machines use a three-way solenoid valve to control brewing and release pressure after extraction. Available components can include complete valves, coils, valve bodies and internal repair parts.

Before ordering a solenoid valve, verify:

  • the coil voltage and frequency;
  • the number and position of the ports;
  • the thread or fitting type;
  • the flow direction;
  • the mounting arrangement;
  • the valve manufacturer and original part number.

A solenoid coil with the correct voltage is not automatically suitable for every valve body.

Brewing group jets, nozzles and gigleurs

Jets and gigleurs restrict or regulate the flow of water through the brewing group. Their external dimensions may be very similar while the calibrated internal opening is different.

Compare the thread, overall length, head shape and internal bore before selecting a replacement. Installing a jet with a different bore can change water flow and brewing-group performance.

Brewing group filters

Small mesh filters help prevent scale and debris from entering narrow passages, valves and jets. They can differ in diameter, length, mesh size and mounting method.

A blocked group filter can restrict water flow, but the cause of a flow problem can also be located elsewhere in the hydraulic circuit. Compare the dimensions and machine compatibility before replacing it.

Brewing group O-rings

O-rings seal fittings, valve parts and other group components. Select an O-ring using its inside diameter, cord thickness and material. Do not estimate the original size solely from an old O-ring, as it may have become compressed, stretched or hardened.

The material is also important because temperature, pressure, water and cleaning chemicals can affect different elastomers in different ways.

Brewing group heat exchangers

A heat exchanger transfers heat from the steam boiler to the water used for brewing. Heat exchangers can differ in length, diameter, flange design, thread and connection position.

Confirm the exact machine version and compare all mounting points and connections. A heat exchanger designed for another version of the same espresso machine may still have different dimensions.

Brewing group pipes

Pipes connect the brewing group to the boiler, heat exchanger and other parts of the water circuit. These pipes can be made from copper, stainless steel or another suitable material and may use different fittings at each end.

Compare the pipe length, diameter, bends, connection type and mounting position. A pipe should not be forced or bent excessively to fit an incompatible machine.

Complete espresso machine brewing groups

A complete brewing group can be useful when the existing group body is damaged, heavily worn or no longer practical to rebuild using individual components.

Complete brewing groups are highly model-specific. Check the mounting points, water connections, electrical components, group diameter and included accessories before ordering. The product image alone is not sufficient to determine compatibility.

E61 and E61-style brewing group parts

The Faema E61 is one of the best-known mechanical brewing-group designs. Variations of this design are used by several espresso machine manufacturers. However, the description “E61-style” does not mean that every component is universal.

Different manufacturers and machine generations can use different valves, springs, diffusers, jets, portafilter gaskets and mounting parts. Always compare the exact dimensions, thread and manufacturer reference. A component that fits one E61-style machine may not be suitable for another.

Original and compatible brewing group parts

The range includes original OEM components and compatible replacement parts. An original part is supplied under, or corresponds with, a manufacturer reference. A compatible part is made by another supplier but may have the dimensions and technical specifications required for the listed machines.

Neither option should be selected by appearance alone. Each product page provides the available references, measurements, material and compatible espresso machine brands or models.

How to identify the correct brewing group component

Before ordering, check:

  • the espresso machine manufacturer and exact model;
  • the version, production year or serial number;
  • the original OEM part number;
  • the dimensions, profile and material;
  • threads, fittings and mounting points;
  • voltage and frequency for electrical components;
  • the compatibility information on the product page.

If the original part number is unavailable, compare the existing component with the technical measurements shown on the product page. Do not rely solely on photographs, as visually similar brewing group parts can have different specifications.

Frequently asked questions about brewing group parts

Are all E61 brewing group parts interchangeable?

No. E61 and E61-style groups can use components with different dimensions, threads and internal designs. Select parts using the exact machine model and technical specifications.

How do I choose the correct portafilter gasket?

Compare the outside diameter, inside diameter, thickness, profile and material. Also check the compatible machine models. The gasket thickness affects the locking position of the portafilter.

What is the difference between a shower screen and a diffuser?

The shower screen is the visible perforated or mesh component above the coffee. The diffuser or shower holder is located behind it and distributes water inside the brewing group. Some group designs also use the diffuser to hold the shower screen in place.

Can I search using an OEM part number?

Yes. Searching with the complete manufacturer part number is normally the most accurate way to locate the correct brewing group component.
